Ultrasonic Sciences Ltd (USL) was formed in 1987 to market products for nondestructive testing (NDT) developed by R&D centres in the UK.
The company was formed by a venture capital group within a major UK insurance company. The products were initially based around high frequency
ultrasonic imaging of materials, including expansion board products for the PC, which was in its infancy at that time. In fact, USL was among
the first companies in the world to develop such expansion boards. Within a short time, the demand from industrial users of ultrasonic NDT
brought forward the development of an expanded range of similar products, suited to a wider range of industry. At the same time, USL started to
produce complete testing systems for industry and medicine, using the same technology. In 1989, the ownership of USL changed following a
management buy out.
Since its inception, USL has sold products and systems into the major "blue chip" companies in Europe and throughout the world. These include Rolls Royce, BAE Systems (formerly British Aerospace), Timken, Ericsson, Siemens and Ford. The systems are acknowledged as advanced, state-of-art products which are the equal of any in the world and in many aspects superior, whilst being extremely cost-effective. USL is almost unique in having the capability to design and manufacture each of the sub-systems required for an ultrasonic inspection system, including mechanical, electronic and software components.
