RTD Profile: Kaunas University of Technology is the biggest technical university in Lithuania and other neighbouring Baltic countries. Prof. K. Barsauskas Ultrasound Institute is part of the University. Research and development activity in the field of ultrasonics started more than 38 years ago. In the former Soviet Union the Ultrasound Institute was one of the leading scientific centres. The main activities of the Ultrasound Institute are:

• Research and development.
• Technology transfer activities.
• Consultancy and engineering in the field of non-destructive testing, including training.

The Ultrasound Institute is also involved in many research & development projects in joint ventures with these Lithuanian and other European research centres and engineering schools. Since 1995, the Ultrasound Institute has been active in:

• European INCO-COPERNICUS programme.
• 8 research projects carried out under contracts with industrial companies in European Union.
• More than 15 Lithuanian research programmes and projects.

The Ultrasound Institute carries out research in all areas of ultrasonic non-destructive testing, evaluation and measurements. The Ultrasound Institute is composed of 12 people (8 doctors, 5 of them posses level 3 in ultrasonic non-destructive testing according to EN473, and a research team with engineers and technicians).

Participation in technical task
KTU will be involved in all the work packages at the request of the SMEs with the emphasis on acoustic development.

Reasons for selection by the SMEs
The research for these work packages will be carried out at the university's ultrasound institute laboratories. This project fulfils KTU's aim of increasing their activities in the growths markets, which includes the inspection of PCBs. KTU was chosen by the SMEs due to its NDT facilities, personnel experience and competitively priced research bid. KTU personnel involved in the project will be Prof. Rymantas Kazys who is an international authority in the field of NDT inspection with over 50 publications plus experience of working on several different NDT technologies.
